Mammography

Mammography Services

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast used to detect tumors or tiny calcium deposits (microcalcifications) that may indicate the presence of breast cancer.

There are two types of mammograms:

1- Screening: This preventive mammogram takes pictures of each breast to detect lumps or any suspicious signs.

2- Diagnostic or Spot Compression: This mammogram takes more pictures of each breast and is used after a woman has discovered lumps in her breast or has experienced other signs or symptoms of breast cancer. The diagnostic mammogram may be supported by a breast ultrasound exam for a complete and accurate study.

Just be comfortable.

Please do not wear deodorant, lotion, powder, or perfume under your arms or on your breasts the day of the procedure. It is best if you wear shorts, pants, or a skirt to your appointment so that you can easily undress from the waist up.

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment to avoid any major delays.

You will check in the front desk, fill out questionnaires and consents, and make payments. You will be escorted to a procedure room, where you may be asked to change into a patient gown.

The technologist will interview you and review your medical history.

The technologist will visually inspect your breasts for any skin changes or puckering. The technologist may also place markers on your skin showing where moles and/or surgical scars are located.

The technologist will manually place your breast in the machine for each image to ensure proper positioning while also coaching you for body placement to ensure you are as comfortable as possible.

There are 4 standard images that will be obtained: 2 of each breast. Additional images may be necessary if the image quality was not optimal, if you have breast implants, or if the entire breast cannot be seen on a single image.

For each image the breast will be compressed between two plates to obtain the best possible image.

The amount of compression is the same for both 2D and 3D mammograms. The time in compression is slightly longer for the 3D mammogram.

Breast compression is necessary to obtain the best possible images while exposing patients to the smallest possible amount of radiation.

A mammogram exam usually takes from 15 to 30 minutes.

The technologist will advise when the exam is done, and you will be escorted back to the front desk reception.

You can request a copy of the images on a CD before you leave so you can share it with any doctor.

Yes, for a small additional fee you can get additional copies.

The results will be done within 48 hours and will be delivered both to you and your doctor through email or fax.
